Bake sales are only slightly more elegant at our school. Several lovely tartes with apples, pears or pistachios sat amid the choices, but generally, cake is cake. Ever rule-bound, all the french-made cakes were round. Even the brownies. Only banana, pumpkin, lemon breads were allowed to be rectangle.
